A crown could be used for a number of other reasons, for instance: You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth.
There are different types of crowns available but the process for each has the same principle. A small amount of the surfaces are removed to ensure there is room for the crown to be placed. The amount of room required depends on the materials used.

Gold crowns – these are extremely strong and are ideally suited to the posterior ‘chewing’ teeth. They are very durable and only a small amount of tooth needs to be removed as the gold is very strong in thin amounts. This is less destructive to the remaining tooth.
Porcelain bonded crowns – this is a thin layer of porcelain bonded to a metal core. These are more destructive to the tooth as more tooth must be removed in order for there to be enough room for the metal and porcelain. Full porcelain crown – no metal used, the most cosmetic in appearance. |
Old metal crowns can be replaced with new all porcelain crowns
